It is hard sometimes to know when to protect or intervene and when to stand back. But it is so important to do, as at some point all children will leave the nest and have to survive on their own and it is so much better if they can do so with confidence in their own abilities to function independently and - based on what this research implies - with a fully functioning brain. Interesting post - I stopped by after reading your comment on Mom-101.

I have unfortunately seen the 20-year-old result of helicopter parenting and it is so scary. [Oh, the phone calls I get to the easiest dilemmas.] It has made me step away from my son a few times to allow him to figure it out, explore,...whatever.

Denise, I live in an area of Los Angeles where for the first two months we were here breaking news happened every week. That meant hours of helicopters over our apartment. I have never been so stressed out. Whop, whop, whop, whop....

Great post.

Thank you for this post. I unfortunately get the vibe from most people in the world that if you aren't a 'helicopter parent' you are not caring enough or doing your duty as a parent - A.K.A. 'slacking off.' That is ridiculous to me as I have known and seen how detrimental an overprotective parent can be to their child. I pray that this will be re-learned and we will see children being raised with the confidence and ability to make decisions and choices on their own. Thanks for recognizing these things!

OK Lindsey - your misspelling is cracking me up. Although the idea of parents vacuuming up their children is rather appealing in some cases!
