Oh Lord. How did the mothers of my mom's generation (I am 45) ever raise decent, intelligent, hard-working kids? All my mom did to stimulate me was to tell me to go outside and play.

I had to laugh because that's precisely why my baby watched Baby Einstein videos, just so I could shower. I'd strap him into his swing and take a three minute shower. I always viewed myself as rather selfish because anything we did join was so that sould have some adult contact, not really for the kids.

Funny thing is I homeschool and find it difficult to do stuff with other "homeschool" moms. I don't really fit in any of the groups I've found.

I've always tried not to feel guilty that I made my kids come along with me instead of my going with them (to Mommy-and-Me classes). I've raised my kids in much the same way my stay-at-home mom raised me--we'd go grocery shopping, visit a museum, run errands....stuff like that. All the while we'd talk about our surroundings. I think it's paid off. My kids are bright and eternally inquisitive.

You can see the gorilla video here: http://viscog.beckman.illinois.edu/flashmovie/15.php (I knew Dan in grad school, and Alison Gopnik is also a colleague of mine). Let us know if your kids see the gorilla! (and let me know if you need the experimental directions)

I could never get into Mommy and Me type stuff, either. The only benefit I could ever see was meeting other moms, but they tended to be so structured you never really got a chance to chat with any of them.

Last year I went to a library storytime where the woman in charge kept scolding the parents for not dancing and singing and shaking the wiggles out along with the kids. Needless to say, I did not return. I mean, I love watching my kids shake out their wiggles, but I did not have any wiggles of my own to shake out.
